Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope everyone enjoys a safe and happy holiday.

Here Today (2021)

Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

Released on May 7, 2021, this pandemic-era movie flew under the radar with fewer people going to the theaters to see movies. Billy Crystal used his plethora of movie and comedy experience to co-write, direct, and star in the film.

The Analysis:

The film centers on comedy writer Charlie Burnz (played by Billy Crystal), who is starting to have memory problems. He struggles to remember details and commitments, which puts a strain on his already rocky relationships with his family. Unresolved problems from the past have snowballed into resentments that create a barrier between Charlie and his children at a time when he needs them the most. As he tries to navigate his health struggles and family dynamics, Charlie stumbles into an unlikely friendship with young singer Emma Payge (played by Tiffany Haddish). Emma’s outgoing personality and unfiltered approach to life threatens to drive a deeper wedge between Charlie and his family, but Emma may be just what Charlie needs.

Heartwarming but bittersweet, this movie is definitely emotional. There are some tear-jerking moments, so make sure you have a box of tissues handy. However, the movie balances moments of sadness and anguish with plenty of humor and heart as well. Billy Crystal’s performance was fantastic and felt very genuine. I enjoyed Tiffany Haddish in a role that was a bit more serious, while still allowing her humor and charm to shine through. Supporting actors were less lovable but served their roles adequately. I did have a few critiques on details of the story that I found confusing or unnecessary, but overall I enjoyed the movie. My takeaway from the film was this: enjoy and appreciate time with your loved ones while you can. If you want a feel good movie that will also make you cry, Here Today is for you.
