Jungle Cruise (2021)

Laura’s Rating: 4/5 Stars

I was worried this would be nearly identical to Jumanji (i.e. a jungle adventure starring Dwyane Johnson) but that was not the case and Jungle Cruise was more entertaining than expected. A sequel by Disney is currently in development.

The Analysis:

Dr. Lily Houghton hopes to revolutionize the world of medicine and impact the ongoing WWI with a legendary Tears of the Moon flower, which is said to cure any illness and heal any injury. Her brother, MacGregor, presents her research to the British Royal Society, in hopes of gaining access to an arrowhead that may be the key to finding the Tears of the Moon. After her request is rejected, Lily and MacGregor steal the artifact and head to Brazil. Fast thinking skipper Frank Wolf maneuvers himself into serving as the siblings’ guide on the treacherous Amazon River.

Jungle Cruise has the archeology, legends, and action of an Indiana Jones movie. The action sequences are exciting and the cast has a chemistry that makes the story interesting. Emily Blunt’s Dr. Houghton adds a strong female presence while Dwyane Johnson’s Frank provides the usual humor and fighting skills you’d expect. Their strong personalities are balanced out by the hilarious and timid MacGregor played by Jack Whitehall. The movie has a good balance of humor, heartfelt moments, and action, making it a crowd pleaser. I’d recommend this fun, entertaining film for your next movie night.
