Mini Movie Reviews
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) - 2.5/5 Stars
Based on the comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is a quick watch at 25 minutes. As Charlie Brown and his friends head out to trick-or-treat, Linus and Sally stake out a pumpkin patch, hoping that the Santa-like Great Pumpkin will appear. As with other Peanuts cartoons, the plot is relatively simple, but charming. There is also a whole sequence with Snoopy as the famous WWI flying ace, the Red Baron. Although admittedly unrelated to Halloween or the rest of the plot, the scenes are still amusing. Upon a recent rewatch, this is not my favorite of the Charlie Brown holiday specials, but watching it remains a fun fall tradition that kids and adults can both enjoy.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) - 3/5 Stars
Upon returning early from a trip, small town doctor Miles Bennell sees several patients that believe their loved ones have been replaced by imposters, despite a lack of evidence and the relatives having identical appearances, behaviors, and even memories. Additionally, patients that had been eager to see Dr. Bennell while he was away appear to have miraculously recovered or moved on from their concerns. When Bennell’s friend Jack stumbles upon a mysterious body in his house, Bennell and his friends must figure out what is happening in their small town before it’s too late…This movie feels like a classic retro horror film, creepy and suspenseful without being outright scary or gory. I found the progression of events to be somewhat unbelievable or illogical at times, but overall I enjoyed the film. Invasion of the Body Snatchers is good for a cozy movie night right before Halloween.
