Mini Movie Reviews
I wish I was able to write a long and thoughtful review about every book I read or movie that I watch. However, some inspire me to write about them more than others. That doesn’t mean I don’t have something to say, but my thoughts might not be worthy of a full length review. With that in mind, I would like to occasionally do a couple of mini reviews to let you know my brief thoughts on books or movies that won’t get their own post on the blog.
The Graduate (1967)- 3.5/5 Stars
While focused on a scandalous affair, The Graduate deals with the disillusionment of young people and how their goals and success markers differ from their parents. Despite being released in 1967, audiences today can still relate to the anxiety about leaving college and the lack of direction that can cause young adults to feel lost. I would love to have watched this film in school in order to have help navigating the abstract symbolism and themes. Bonus: this movie has a killer soundtrack courtesy of Simon & Garfunkel.
After Hours (1985)- 3/5 stars
This movie is super weird. It was a recommendation from my Dad, who enjoys the occasional off-the-wall, bizarre film. It certainly delivered in that department. After Hours is filled with unexpected, uncomfortable, kooky mayhem. The scenes are unnerving and awkward but the movie really sucks you in. I’m glad I watched it and I liked the juxtaposition of a boring 9-5 with the nightlife of SoHo, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it to a friend due to the general weirdness.
Detective Pikachu (2019)- 3.5/5 stars
I really had no interest in this movie before watching and I assumed it would be an underwhelming kids movie. Not having been interested in Pokemon as a child, I was lacking the nostalgia that likely drew in many viewers. While it is no cinematic masterpiece, I did end up really enjoying the movie. Ryan Renolds as Pikachu is actually really funny and the movie had more heartwarming factor than I anticipated. A fun, entertaining watch.
