Phantoms by Dean Koontz (1983)

Laura’s Rating: 3/5 Stars

This book was recommended by a friend and while I did like the general concept, it took me quite a while to get through. Phantoms was made into a movie in 1998, which received terrible reviews.

The Analysis:

Dr. Jenny Paige and her younger sister Lisa arrive in the small town of Snowfield, California to an eerie silence. The town seems to be standing still with no people out, no animals making noises, and barely a rustle of wind. As the sisters start to explore the town, it seems like Snowfield’s residents have either disappeared or met a gruesome fate.

I really enjoyed the first few chapters of the book. Koontz builds a great creepy atmosphere that gives off the sense of some impending doom. There are a decent amount of characters in the book but they were well developed so it wasn’t hard to keep track of them. Unfortunately, there’s something about Phantoms that prevented me from really getting into it. I wanted to keep reading, but it took me a long time to finish the book and it dragged on in the middle.

Phantoms includes various influences from H.P. Lovecraft and others. The book is definitely in the horror genre but includes some sci-fi elements and there is a lot of science-based investigation that happens in the novel. Phantoms is a decent read for horror fans looking for something a bit different.
