Seven (1995)

A dark and grisly thriller not for the faint of heart.
Laura’s Rating: 5/5 Stars
Plot: Two detectives, one on his way out and one just starting in the big city, hunt a serial killer who kills based on the seven deadly sins.
Analysis: God I love (director) David Fincher. I’ve seen many scenes of this movie, but I hadn’t watched it all the way through. Even knowing some of what happens, this movie was so intense.
Se7en is everything I want in a thriller. Grisly, rainy setting, seasoned detective and an eager young gun partner, emotional depth from the relationships, and a crafty killer with complex motivations.
This movie is a 10/10 performance from Morgan Freeman (and a solid one from Pitt as well). The tension between him as Somerset and Brad Pitt as Mills is perfect. Mills’s eager impatience grinds up against Somerset’s calm and methodical approach. He knows from the beginning that this is something complex, while Mills is eager to jump to conclusions and make hasty moves. Their relationship mirrors the feeling of the movie - the viewer’s eagerness to put the pieces together while the slow inevitable unraveling of the plot forces patience and understanding.
The murder scenes are incredibly brutal but so well crafted and thought out. I literally can’t talk about the ending. Watch Se7en, but only if you’re ready.
