The Analysis:
The movie starts with a highlight reel of basketball superstar Lebron James, who hopes his (fictional for the movie) sons will follow in his footsteps. His youngest son, Dom, has other plans to become a video-game designer. When Lebron and his family head to Warner Bros. Studios to discuss a film deal, Dom gets trapped in a digital universe by a new AI system, called Al-G (played by Don Cheadle). In order to free his son, Lebron must put together a team of (you guessed it) Looney Tunes and beat Al-G in a digitally enhanced basketball game.
I’ve heard mixed reviews about this film. The movie highlights a ton of Warner Bros. content, which some people thought was a fun crossover, and others resented as a WB commercial in lieu of a plot. I personally found the references to other movies and characters fun and I liked that they played with the universe. The movie has a similar basic structure to the original Space Jam, with a modern twist to fit 2021. I was a bit disappointed by the lack of star power. While there were a couple notable NBA and WNBA players, it wasn’t the level of celebrity I was looking for. Overall, the movie is entertaining and good for some laughs, with a heartwarming plot to tie it all together. Not a revolutionary film, but a fun movie for the summer.
