The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green (2021)
Laura’s Rating: 3/5 Stars
This book is an extension of the popular podcast hosted by author John Green and his brother, Hank. Written during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the book very much feels like a lockdown writing project.
The Analysis:
This book is like none other that I have read before. It is a collection of essays written by famed author John Green. Each essay features a different topic, ranging from Diet Dr. Pepper to Canada geese to Disney’s Hall of Presidents to scratch-and-sniff stickers. Each chapter provides some background on the topic, an interesting anecdote or personal experience, and Green’s rating of the topic on a scale of 1 to 5 stars. (As a reviewer also using a 5 star scale, I have to say that Green’s inconsistent ratings did drive me crazy. 4 stars for “wintry mix” because it reminds him of home in Indianapolis with his wife? C’mon.)
The Anthropocene Reviewed is very reflective and I found that I had to be in the right mood for it. If you feel like being contemplative or hearing stories, then this book hits right (it was the perfect audiobook for a long drive). However, if you’re busy or distracted, I think the vibe of the book won’t match your mindset. Essays varied between fun facts, personal stories, philosophical reflections, life lessons, and Green’s opinions. I personally prefer more objective ratings and liked the fun and informative earlier chapters better. As the book went on, the essays became more of a personal therapeutic exercise for the author, which caused the book to fall off towards the end for me. Regardless of what you’re looking for, The Anthropocene Reviewed has a little bit of everything and makes for an interesting read that will make you think.
