The Nice Guys (2016)
Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars
Despite mostly positive reviews, this stylish movie flew a bit under the radar. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe make for an interesting pair to headline this film, and I think they worked well together.
The Analysis:
Private detective Holland March (Gosling) crosses paths with hired enforcer Jackson Healy (Crowe) while on a job to find a woman named Amelia. It turns out they aren’t the only ones looking for Amelia and their only chance to find her and stay alive is to team up.
Set in 1977 Los Angeles, the movie has good costumes and a killer soundtrack. Gosling and Crowe’s characters have a very dry sense of humor that works well and the film has an edgy tone (with taboo subjects at the edges) but it made me laugh. The movie borders on feeling like a parody of the classic buddy cop film but eventually ramps up into an action film that can hold its own.
Holland March’s daughter is cute and endearing but I think the movie would do well without her too. It feels like the film can’t decide if it’s gritty, funny, or heartwarming. It manages to balance a bit of each but I think the heartwarming aspects make the movie feel more mainstream, when what really shines is its quirky tone.
I almost gave the movie 4 stars but it isn’t quite as memorable as it should’ve been given some of its more unique aspects. Still, I’d recommend The Nice Guys if you’re looking for an entertaining action flick.
