The Visit (2015)

An unsettling story of kids trying to connect with their estranged grandparents.
Laura’s Rating: 3/5 Stars
Plot: Teenagers Becca and Tyler board a train to visit their maternal grandparents, whom they’ve never met before. Nana and Pop Pop seem perfect and welcoming, but then things start to get a bit weird.
Opinion: There were some interesting ideas explored in this movie, like the horrors and confusion of aging, but the tone was all over the place. The horror bordered on campy and silly a few times, which didn’t work for me. The little brother made up rap lyrics that made him annoying in a realistic preteen boy kind of way, but eventually I was pretty over it. There was some emotional growth and messaging throughout the plot, but it was sandwiched between awkward scenes.
I wanted to like this movie and I did enjoy some parts of it, but it just wasn’t quite there in the end. I liked the twist a lot, but the rest of the film after it didn’t hit right. Despite his inconsistent level of filmmaking, I am an M. Night Shyamalan apologist and I’ll keep seeing his movies, but The Visit was definitely not his best work.
