The Woman of the Hour (2024)

A thriller based on a true story of a killer featured on a reality tv show.
Laura’s Rating: 4/5 Stars
Plot: The movie is based on the true story of Rodney Alcala, a killer that evaded police despite multiple reports to authorities. Alcala really appeared on the The Dating Game tv show in 1978.
Opinion: This was Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut and I think she killed it. This was a serial killer movie made by a woman, and you can tell. The story, while moved along by Rodney’s actions, is told through a female lens. It highlights how women would see the situation and what they would experience. The movie does an amazing job of showing how women often find themselves in uncomfortable situations and even end up doing things they’d rather not (i.e. dating, inviting in, laughing with, sleeping with, etc. a man they don’t want to) in order to avoid any confusion or awkwardness. The movie also shows that just because a guy knows all the right things to say doesn’t mean he’s a good person. In fact, that skill only makes him more dangerous.
The women preyed on by Rodney Alcala are humanized in the film before simply becoming the next victim and the film implies the violence that follows without glorifying it or making Rodney the star of the show. Anna Kendrick donated her earnings from the film to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network and the National Center for Victims of Crime so as not to profit off of the story of sexual violence victims.
Definitely check this out if you’re into true crime or if you’re looking for a serial killer movie with a refreshing female perspective.
