“Wuthering Heights” (2026)

A loose adaptation of Brontë’s classic novel.

Laura’s Rating: 2.5/5 Stars

Plot: Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff develop a close bond but are forced apart and destined for heartbreak.

Analysis: Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi delivered solid performances, with believable acting and emotional depth. I have no notes for either actor and they played the roles as written.

The rest of the movie didn’t really hold up in my opinion. The tweaks from the original book plot made for a fine movie plot, although maybe lost some of the most impactful points along the way. Additionally, the last third or so of the story is completely removed from the film, which eliminates the generational repetition aspect of Brontë’s story.

The over the top stylization felt inconsistent and didn’t add anything to the story in my opinion. It was the same with the modern music thrown in with more predictable tracks. A movie like 2013’s Great Gatsby is a better example of a highly-stylized film with a modern soundtrack that worked much better for me.

The marketing and talk around this film has focused on the sexual tension and a few bondage-adjacent scenes. Sure the movie has moments of steamy romance, but it’s mostly sad and the characters are unlikable. Billed as a sexy reimagining, it’s actually just a very pretty period film with a toxic couple at the center.
