Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi (2019)

A charming and thoughtful take on the idea of time travel.

Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

Plot: A café in Tokyo offers customers a chance to travel back in time. But there are some rather inconvenient rules, including that they must return back to the present before their coffee gets cold.

Analysis: This story is divided into 4 parts, each with their own distinct storyline, but they do all intertwine. I think the book gets better as you go along, so stick with it if it doesn’t immediately hook you.

This book is very reflective and shows the importance of perspective and attitude. It also made me cry so be ready for that. Some of the book is bittersweet, but the overall tone is hopeful and optimistic for the future. I think a wide audience would enjoy Before the Coffee Gets Cold.
