Like Barney and Friends, but evil.

Plot: A fluffy orange unicorn with a kids show is actually a magical being holding the cast hostage and becoming increasingly unstable.

Opinion: Buddy had set design, decent acting, and terrible writing. The set up is great, with the friendly mailman and nurse, talking set pieces like the couch and train, and stereotypical catchy songs with lessons for kids. I enjoyed watching the kids becoming increasingly uneasy and suspicious while there were hints of cracks in Buddy’s loving facade. The first 30 min are great and then it becomes boring and stretched out.

It felt like there was maybe 45 minutes of content stretched into an hour and a half. I knew the parody would be heavy from the start, but it got a bit over the top when the kids started swearing and Buddy became creepy towards the nurse. These parts felt like they only provided shock value without any wit or real humor.

I enjoyed some of the lore towards the end of the movie, but by then we were in wrap up mode and too busy to explore it. Buddy is a fun concept and visually enjoyable, but the execution could have been much better.
