Death on the Nile (2022)
Laura’s Rating: 4/5 Stars
Last year, I read the famous Agatha Christie novel of the same name that inspired this film. Be sure to check out my review of the book and the official Lit and Flicks reading guide at litandflicks.com.
The Analysis:
Famous detective Hercule Poirot is vacationing in Egypt when he runs into an old friend and is invited to join a wedding celebration for heiress Linnet Ridgeway and her new husband. When the couple decided to host their friends and family on a lavish honeymoon vacation, they never expected several of their guests to wind up dead. Luckily, they have Hercule Poirot at their disposal to get to the bottom of the murders before it’s too late.
A visually stunning film, Death on the Nile embraces the beauty and wonder of Egypt as the backdrop for the story with epic panoramic shots set to a good musical score. The film stays pretty true to Agatha Christie’s novel and the ensemble cast delivers fairly good performances across the board. I enjoyed this movie significantly more than the 2017 adaptation of Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. The characters were easier to understand and the cast had better chemistry this time around. I really enjoyed the opening scene, which added some depth to Poirot’s character and helped give context to his personality quirks.
I will say that just as in the book, you do have to pay attention to keep track of all the characters. In one scene, Poirot’s friend Bouc gives a quick rundown of each of the major players and how they relate to one another, which worked well to introduce the complicated cast of characters. Death on the Nile was enjoyable to watch and brought Agatha Christie’s novel to life.
