Goblin by Josh Malerman (2021)

A horror novel told in six novellas.

Laura’s Rating: 3/5 Stars

Plot: The story contains six short stories, as well as a prologue and epilogue, that all center on the town of Goblin. Each contains a mysterious, dark, and spooky tale, offering a glimpse into Goblin’s history and its residents.

Analysis: These stories reminded me a bit of The Twilight Zone or even short Lovecraft tales. They each feature characters plagued by darkness, anxiety, or their own sins. The unrelenting rain of Goblin and the dark history of the city tie everything together and each story has its own twist.

I liked this book but I wanted more. Each story felt like it was left on a bit of a cliffhanger or lacking some resolution. I get the six novellas format, which was unique and interesting. I just wish each story had a little more to it. I liked the set up, but then they ended abruptly or without really exploring the consequences of the final action point.

Overall, this had a good spooky vibe and some compelling stories. Goblin just didn’t feel complete to me, which left me a little unsatisfied.
