Hamnet (2025)

A movie based on Maggie O'Farrell’s 2020 historical fiction book detailing Shakespeare’s inspiration to write Hamlet.

Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

Plot: The movie dramatizes the meeting of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes Hathaway and their subsequent family life often filled with tragedy.

Analysis: Well this was a sad movie to watch on an airplane.

Everyone is talking about Jessie Buckley’s performance (which is good and Oscar winning), but give the kid that plays Hamnet an Oscar. 12 year old Jacobi Jupe played his role with such raw emotion and really is the heart of the film.

This story adds a crazy layer of emotional depth to the famous play of Hamlet, showing the deep emotion and experiences that potentially shaped the story.

The film feels like poetry. It’s soft and slow and tinged with heartbreak. A pretty soundtrack accompanies the story well. If you’re ready to be sad in a romantic sort of way, give Hamnet a watch.
