Happy Place by Emily Henry (2023)

It's my birthday! Posting my review of a great summer read to celebrate 🎉

Laura’s Rating: 4.5/5 Stars

Plot: Harriet Kilpatrick and Wyn Connor are the perfect couple and have been since they started dating in college. The only problem is that they actually broke up months ago and haven’t told any of their friends. Thrown together on the friend group’s annual vacation, Harriet and Wyn decide to pretend they are still together for the sake of the trip. They know how to act in love, so what could go wrong?

Opinion: Emily Henry delivers another charming yet intense romance with memorable characters and a central conflict that pulls you in. Even as I thought I had figured out the main problem and how it would eventually blow up, the author added her own nuance to the plot that I didn’t necessarily expect.

The six main characters have depth and complex backgrounds that perfectly set up the interactions between the group. As always, the flirty banter is 10/10.  The book is heartwarming, sad, nostalgic, and hopeful, with some thoughtful insights on growing and changing while seeking happiness and fulfillment.

“Everything is changing. It has to. You can’t stop time. All you can do is point yourself in a direction and hope the wind will let you get there.”

I’d recommend this book, along with Henry’s other works, for anyone looking for a book that contains more layered character development than your usual romance.
