Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
Laura’s Rating: 3.5 Stars
This long awaited sequel to Hocus Pocus (1993) was released at the end of September on Disney+. Hopefully this doesn’t apply to too many people, but I’m begging you to watch the first movie if you haven’t seen it.
The Analysis:
The Sanderson Sisters tried to steal the lives of the children of Salem in 1993, but they’re long gone now, right? When teenage friends accidentally bring the infamous trio of witches back to life 29 years later, they must figure out how to stop them once and for all.
I love a good origin story, and the audience is treated to a brief origin of the Sanderson Sisters as children growing up in Salem. The child actors that played Winnifred, Mary, and Sarah were amazing in their roles and perfectly adopted the mannerisms and speech patterns already established for those characters.
Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker reprise their roles flawlessly and there’s plenty of funny modern day things for the witches to interact with from Walgreens to Siri to Roomba vacuums.
Is this movie a cinematic masterpiece? No. There’s some parts of the film I found cheesy (the singing numbers) or rushed (the ending). But does it achieve what it set out to be? I think so. Hocus Pocus 2 embraces the nostalgia associated with the original film, bringing back favorite characters and iconic lines, while adding a fresh twist. The movie is fun and whimsical while emphasizing the value of sisterhood. If you’re a fan of the original, Hocus Pocus 2 is worth the watch.
