I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025)

The reboot of the classic 90s slasher almost 30 years in the making.
Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars
Plot: A whole new cast of teens are celebrating the Fourth of July when a tragic car accident sets grisly events in motion that are eerily similar to the 1997 massacre.
Analysis: I thought the casting was pretty well done, with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. being worked into the group in a way that felt pretty natural, while letting the new cast shine and have their own story. Obviously this movie is a sequel, but you can likely watch it without having seen the original and still follow along pretty well. That being said, I did quite enjoy the nods to the 1997 film and fans of the original movie would appreciate the references and cameos.
A similar story line does play out initially, but I have to admit that I didn’t see every twist and turn coming. They also updated many of the details to match the behavior, possessions, and looks of young adults now, while keeping some similar character archetypes in place. There weren’t too many jump scares but there were a couple so be prepared. Some of the kills are pretty gruesome as well so expect a bit of gore, but I didn’t think it was over the top.
Overall, this is a solid slasher flick that pays homage to a classic in the genre. I’d recommend it to fans of the original and newcomers alike.
