Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros (2023)

The second installment in the Fourth Wing series. The next book, Onyx Storm, releases tomorrow!
Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars
Plot: Now in their second year at Basgiath War College, Violet and her friends are pushed to their limits. When Violet discovers an ancient secret, everything she loves is put at risk.
Opinion: This book is good and I wanted to keep reading, but it felt too drawn out. I want the book to be half the length. The same conflicts from the beginning kept happening over and over again well into the story.
I get that Violet is the main character, but the whole chosen one vibe where everyone else is a useless side character is annoying. These kids are making decisions about literal war and when the adults question it, they use their family privilege to shut down resistance. I also feel like despite being a strong female lead in theory, Violet lacks some agency and is often steered by the men in her life.
The latter half of the book is more action packed and kept my attention. Without spoilers, some new circumstances make things more interesting and there’s a pretty shocking twist at the end. There’s a lot of similarities to A Court of Thorns and Roses, but I still think this series is better written. I’m looking forward to the third book but I’m not sure how long I can hang with this series.
