Longlegs (2024)

An eerie serial killer movie with some occult twists.

Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

Plot: After a breakthrough on another case, FBI agent Lee Harker is assigned to investigate a series of seemingly unexplainable murders before the killer strikes again.

Opinion: I love a hint of the supernatural or the occult so the otherworldly possibilities tied to this case are right up my alley. This film didn’t feel like a cookie cutter addition to the serial killer genre, which I appreciated.

I just can’t totally make up my mind about this movie. Director Osgood Perkins creates a masterfully eerie and dark tone for the film. There’s a foreboding atmosphere and the sound design and musical score is appropriately jarring and unsettling. The cinematography is quite interesting and thoughtful and adds to the uneasy feeling of the film. I was totally engaged and was dying to see what would happen next. I have some questions and I think a few things could’ve been explained further, but I also can’t stop thinking about it.

The acting of most of the cast is great, with Blair Underwood as Agent Carter being a standout for me. Maika Monroe as Lee Harker is uncomfortable, but it works for her character. Honestly, Nicolas Cage’s performance borders on goofy (because of course it does) and nearly ruins the film for me. The other issue for me is the quick explanation of what’s going on toward the end of the film. I wanted more answers and I think there are some plot holes or at least ideas that remain unexplored. At an hour and 41 minutes, I actually would have appreciated a bit more movie to flesh out everything.

Longlegs is unsettling, dark, and moody. I was trying to figure out what was going on the whole time and the end was absolutely crazy. I’d recommend it for fans of horror, occult, and serial killer thrillers.
