Maxxxine (2024)

ree

The third and final installment in the X trilogy from Ti West.

Laura’s Rating: 2/5 Stars

Plot: Mia Goth returns as Maxine, an adult film star who finally lands a real acting gig in a horror movie sequel. After attending a party in the hills, several of Maxine’s friends are killed, leading the police to question her and reveal their knowledge of her previous crimes from X

Opinion: I understand this movie, but I didn’t enjoy it. I think this might be a case of style over substance with too much reliance on other film references. Just like in the other two films, this one has some brutal killings and adult themes. Unlike the previous two installments, the 80s LA setting is urban and full of people. There’s also actual law enforcement interaction, but it wasn’t my favorite. I thought the good cop/bad cop routine was a little heavy and the actual policing was comically bad. The police wouldn’t bring a body out of a crime scene covered in a bloody sheet and then lift it off to reveal the victim’s face.

The movie brings elements of X into the story, but has its own distinct plotline. It wraps up the trilogy with an interesting twist, but it didn’t really do much for me.
