Murder Road by Simone St. James (2024)

A supernatural thriller set in a small town.

Laura’s Rating: 3/5 Stars

Plot: Newlyweds April and Eddie are driving towards their honeymoon hotel when they see a young woman walking alone on the side of the road at night. After they stop to give her a ride to the nearest town, they find themselves tangled up in a decades-long investigation of a string of unsolved murders.

Analysis: What a great first chapter! The characters and the atmosphere are established right away and the hook sucked me right in. Unfortunately, the book lost its way a bit throughout. I still enjoyed the writing and the plot was okay, but much of the middle felt jumbled and drawn out. The pacing was a bit slow and by the end, the story was a bit complicated in a bad way.

The story felt too similar to Silence for the Dead, which I thought was better. The relationship between the main characters wasn’t my favorite and the conclusion to the story was not super satisfying in my opinion. Murder Road was decent, but certainly not my favorite by Simone St. James.
