One Day in December by Josie Silver (2018)

A story of heartbreak, romance, and friendship spanning 10 years.

Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

Plot: While riding the bus one day in December, Laurie is pretty sure she spots her true love. They lock eyes through the bus window, but as it pulls away, it appears that the bus boy is gone. Laurie spends a year searching in vain for her missed love connection, only for him to show up at a party at her house…as her best friend’s new boyfriend.

Analysis: Watching the main characters grow, mature, and change over 10 years is interesting and insightful. The writing is good and there are some meaningful excerpts that I highlighted. The book touches on the evolution of friendships, feelings of nostalgia, and growing at a different pace from one’s friends. The characters are well developed, but they are flawed and not exceptionally likable. This is probably realistic, but not as fun to read.

I did enjoy this book and there are some pretty emotional parts. The plot was compelling and made me want to keep reading, but I just couldn’t get past a couple of flaws that I really didn’t enjoy. I’ve been reading more romances than I used to, but certain tropes still just aren’t for me. If you enjoy romances, definitely give this one a try.
