Red Notice (2021)
Laura’s Rating: 2.5/5 Stars
Red Notice became the most viewed movie on Netflix the day it was released on the streaming platform. It eventually became the 5th most-streamed movie title of 2021. Despite some disappointing reviews, two sequels were officially announced in January and are now in development.
The Analysis:
FBI Agent John Hartley (played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) is forced to team up with art thief Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) to find a stolen bejeweled egg. The duo begin a globe-spanning adventure to find a cunning and elusive art thief known as “The Bishop”, who always seems to be one step ahead of them.
The star-studded cast and big marketing push by Netflix should have made this movie into a blockbuster hit. While the viewership numbers would indicate success, the movie itself is a bit disappointing. My biggest issue was that the plot was vaguely interesting but I felt like I’d seen it 10 times before. Indiana Jones has already circled the globe in search of valuable artifacts hoarded by the Nazis and he did it better than anyone in this movie. Every character in Red Notice fills the archetype established in all the adventure/heist movies that have come before it. The Rock plays the typical strong leading man, but brings nothing new to the table. Ryan Reynolds’s character seemed to have the sarcastic and witty personality that Reynolds has established in real life, which was okay but not anything new. We get it, you can’t take anything seriously. Gal Gadot was again a beautiful yet badass fighter, but in a way that is starting to feel redundant. This movie wasn’t bad, it’s just been done before, making it mildly entertaining but forgettable.
