Renfield (2023)

A campy twist on the classic vampire story of Dracula.
Laura’s Rating: 2.5/5 Stars
Plot: Nearly 100 years ago, English lawyer R. M. Renfield travels to Transylvania in hopes to broker a land deal with one Count Dracula. Renfield ends up becoming Dracula's familiar, meaning he has special powers like immortality and super strength and must serve Dracula as his master. In the present, Renfield has become tired of supplying victims for Dracula and waiting on him hand and foot for many decades.
Analysis:They really just let Nicolas Cage go crazy and do his thing in this movie. He embodies the powerful character of Count Dracula well, with a chaotic but demanding personality. His over the top attitude and performance fits the exaggerated and comedic tone of the movie. I enjoyed the plot line with the crime family and I was rooting for the character of Renfield to succeed despite his past deeds. This movie was super weird, but it did make me laugh several times. Renfield was almost a so-bad-it’s-good situation, where I found the movie rather entertaining despite a lack of any real quality filmmaking.
Renfield was violent and gory, but in a campy way. It was lighthearted despite the death and destruction, which made it entertaining. I’d recommend it for horror comedy fans as an enjoyable watch, but don’t expect a cinematic masterpiece.
