Sinners (2025)

A stylish and unique horror drama from director Ryan Coogler.

Laura’s Rating: 4/5 Stars

Plot: Set in 1932, troublesome brothers return to Mississippi after fighting in WWI and working for Al Capone in Chicago. Hoping to open a juke joint, they gather up friends and musicians to help with their venture. But a sinister presence threatens to turn their night of fun into a nightmare.

Opinion: This movie was wild! There’s equal parts drama and horror plus some comedy and camp thrown in. The language is harsh and there’s a few pretty violent scenes. In some ways, the movie reminded me of Tarantino’s stylized filmmaking.

The casting and the character development was fantastic. Twin brothers Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan) were full of personality and sass, but also depth.

I loved that Sinners was an original and fleshed out black story. Rather than movies that insert diversity as an afterthought, Sinners felt like a genuine celebration and examination of black culture in the 1930s and beyond. The influence and evolution of blues music was prevalent throughout and I enjoyed the barn scene that tied the music to the past and the present.

Overall, I really enjoyed Sinners and I’d recommend it to those not easily offended or scared. Make sure you stick around for the post-credits scene!
