Surviving to Drive by Guenther Steiner (2023)

A look inside the mind and experiences of a Formula 1 Racing team principal.

Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

Plot: This book details Steiner’s experience as the Haas F1 team principal over the 2022 season. It reads like a diary, with dated and even timed entries.

Analysis: For those of you who don’t know, I am a huge Formula 1 fan, and I specifically love Guenther Steiner, ex-team principal of the Haas F1 team. I’ll start by saying that if you’re not familiar with F1 or Steiner, you probably won’t enjoy the book. If you’re not a fan yet, I highly recommend Netflix’s Drive to Survive series to get you up to speed.

I appreciate Guenther’s honesty and self-awareness and the behind the scenes access to the thoughts and feelings of a team principal during each stage of the F1 season. Guenther is very much himself and is comfortable with his abilities, leadership style, and personality. His dry humor shines through his stories of triumph, defeat, frustration, and intensity.

I listened to the audiobook because Guenther himself narrates it, which I loved. Fair warning that he does have a pretty strong accent, but I could still understand what he was saying including the many swear words, as you’d expect. I’d definitely recommend this book for F1 fans.
