With a Vengeance by Riley Sager (2025)

An Agatha Christie inspired locked room thriller.

Plot: Anna Matheson has gathered six people together for a train ride from Philadelphia to Chicago. The six people just so happen to be those responsible for ruining her family 12 years earlier. Anna claims she is searching for justice, not revenge. But when a passenger turns up dead, things get complicated.

Opinion: So it’s very Murder on the Orient Express/And Then There Were None. Which is fine, but it’s been done before (and not just by Agatha Christie). I really like Riley Sager’s writing, so I was able to get into the story pretty quickly, but I wasn’t obsessed with the concept. By 40% in, I was craving a twist to keep it interesting.

The cast of characters is fine, but not incredibly compelling. You can only develop characters so much when there are more than half a dozen main ones. There’s a lot of twists and turns, with maybe a few too many red herrings. In my opinion, With a Vengeance was entertaining but nothing special.
