The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler (1985)

A journey of self discovery for a man who loves routine and efficiency.
Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars
Plot: Macon writes books for businessmen who like routine and dislike traveling. He details how to find a hotel with proper amenities, a reliable cup of coffee, and where to take a client to dinner, all while staying as close as possible to the hotel. When Macon’s wife Sarah declares that she wants a divorce, his life becomes exactly what he hates: unpredictable, inefficient, and lonely.
Analysis: The book is charming and well written, but the pace was a bit slow for me. I liked the gradual evolution of Macon’s attitude and habits, but the middle stretched out a bit too long.
In some ways, the book reminded me of a Frederick Backman novel, with interesting characters and relationships and some insights on life. The writing is subtle but intentional. I’d recommend it for a relaxing read.
