The Association by Bentley Little (2001)

A couple finds out that dealing with HOAs can be a nightmare.
Laura’s Rating: 2.5/5 Stars
Plot: Barry and Maureen leave the hustle and bustle of California to find tranquility in a gated community in Colorado. At first, the gates and the tidy neighborhood seem like a dream, but things aren’t as peaceful as they seem. The homeowners association has control over everything and their authority seems to know no bounds.
Analysis: This book was an interesting concept and I don’t have a ton of specific complaints, but it was just okay. Basing a horror novel based on an HOA is pretty funny and surprisingly relatable for anyone who has dealt with an association. The characters in the book were developed well enough to keep track of, but I didn’t feel particularly attached to any of them.
I understood the gist of what was happening relatively quickly so the story was maybe a bit drawn out for the ending to be only a couple of chapters. This book was unique, but I wasn’t overly impressed.
