A collection of some of Lovecraft’s most famous short stories.

Opinion: This was my first time reading Lovecraft, and I enjoyed it. His influence on science fiction and horror is obvious and remains impactful today.
I really like some of these stories, while other ones were just fine. I actually tended to enjoy the shorter ones better because they pack a punch without drawing it out. The Call of Cthulhu and The Dunwich Horror are some of his most famous stories, but I enjoyed The Outsider and Pickman’s Model.
Given that much of his work was published in the 1910s and 1920s, the social norms were different. Some of his writings have racially insensitive undertones, so be aware and keep in mind the time period that Lovecraft was writing in.
Lovecraft’s writing is very poetic and descriptive, which works well with the abstract sci-fi/horror content. He can expertly create a mood through descriptions of the setting, weather, smells, and sounds of the scene.
Many of the stories, especially ones outside the Cthulhu mythos, reminded me of The Twilight Zone, which I really liked. Last minute twists and changes in perspective act as a punchline at the end of the story, leaving the reader surprised and thrilled. I’d recommend Lovecraft for anyone into sci-fi influenced horror.
