The Christmas Guest by Peter Swanson (2023)

Merry Christmas!

The Christmas Guest by Peter Swanson (2023)

A festive yet haunting novella.

Laura’s Rating: 4/5 Stars

Plot: An American student studying in London is invited to spend Christmas at her classmate’s country home. The idyllic town is haunted by a dark history that could threaten to return over the holiday.

Analysis: I love that the book gives you all the classic, cozy Christmas elements that you want: a large English manor in the countryside, burning fires, a cozy pub. This sets the scene for a perfect Christmas caper and makes it fun to read despite the not so happy events that take place.

I liked the gothic tone of the novel, with hints of romance, nostalgia, and of course, murder. Much of the book is told via diary entries, which was a bit different. The novella was well written and compelling, with a couple of twists that I enjoyed.

I love that you could read this in a day or two and it’s perfect for Christmas. So get reading now or save this gem for next year.
