The Craft (1996)

A teen drama turned cult classic that’s perfect for an October viewing.

Laura’s Rating: 2.5/5 Stars

Plot: Sarah Bailey struggles to find friends at her new school until she is welcomed by three outcasts into their group. Sarah’s new friends are rumored to be witches looking for a fourth to complete their coven. After Sarah’s experience with a new love interest goes south, she and the other girls are ready to see just how powerful they might be against those who have wronged them.

Analysis: The plot is pretty basic, as you might expect for a teen movie, and the acting is pretty average. The movie includes some serious themes for teenage girls including suicide and sexual assault, which adds some depth to the film. Female power is a major theme, which helps the film remain relevant despite its 90s clichés.

The movie reminds me of Heathers and even Cruel Intentions, with a message that leaves a lasting impact on teens and young women.
