The Game (1997)

Writer: litandflickslitandflicks

Laura’s Rating: 4/5 Stars

This movie is a thriller directed by David Fincher, starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn. The Game was not nominated for any major awards, but was generally well received by critics.

The Analysis:

Nicholas Van Orton (Douglas) is a divorced businessman who has little contact with his family, including his younger brother, Conrad (Penn). Nicolas enjoys his wealth and success but makes no effort to maintain meaningful relationships and seems unfulfilled. As a birthday gift, Conrad gives Nicholas a gift card for a unique game run by a company called Consumer Recreation Services, promising that it will change his life. Nicolas eventually goes to CRS Headquarters to find out about this personalized game and is forced to complete lengthy physical and psychological testing as part of his application. He is told that his application is rejected, but after a mysterious delivery at his house, he begins to think that his life is in danger.

After the initial setup, this movie kept me on the edge of my seat. Everything is not as it seems and as more details are revealed, Nicolas’s situation seems more and more dire. The movie is fast-paced and complicated enough to remain interesting without being too confusing. I don’t want to go into more detail and give anything away, but I recommend the movie. Fans of action and thriller-style intrigue would like The Game. It’s currently available on Amazon Prime so grab some popcorn and enjoy an underrated movie with twists and turns that will keep you guessing.
