The Gorge (2025)

Described as a “science fiction romantic action horror film” which sounds ridiculous, but is somewhat accurate.

Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

Plot: Levi, a former Marine sniper, is stationed in a remote tower on one side of a mysterious gorge. On the other side, Kremlin contractor Drasa is given the same mission: guard a deep gorge with unknown threats inside. The two develop an unlikely friendship considering their strict no contact orders that apply to both the outside world or each other.

Analysis: The movie stars Miles Teller, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Sigourney Weaver, who all deliver solid performances as expected. Stuck on opposite sides of the gorge with limited ways to communicate, the two main characters actually develop a very cute friendship.

There are some decent storytelling devices employed to show the mundane nature of their postings. Miles Teller’s beard growing out to show the passage of time is chef’s kiss.

While we learn some facts about the gorge’s origin, there’s a lot more to unpack. I never say this but I actually think this may have been better as a slow burn tv series with more time to reveal the true nature of the gorge.

Light spoiler: The creatures are interesting but border on cheesy. I want sci-fi, not high fantasy. The creatures reminded me of Davy Jones’s men in Pirates of the Caribbean.

I really liked this movie, but it could have been better. High marks for enjoyability, mediocre marks for quality.
