The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas (2022)

A gothic suspense story set after the Mexican War of Independence.
Laura’s Rating: 3/5 Stars
Plot: When Beatriz’s father is taken after the overthrow of the Mexican government, she latches onto a proposal from a handsome, wealthy man. His countryside estate provides security at first, but soon Beatriz feels a sense of unease and feels like she is being watched when no one is around. Can young priest Padre Andrés help her drive out the darkness of the house before it’s too late?
Analysis: This book had similarities to The Familiar and Mexican Gothic. It has the gothic elements of a foreboding house, a sense of fear, a creeping darkness, and even a touch of romance. The setting of post war 1820s Mexico is interesting and meant to explain certain decisions and tensions, but I don’t think it was used to its full potential.
I found the plot a bit slow at first, but it did finally start to pick up and draw me in more. The alternating perspectives and timelines were a bit confusing before I learned who all of the characters were and how they were related. I did specifically like Padre Andrés and his complex role in the church and the community.
There were some really engaging, creepy scenes, but I think the story is drawn out a bit too long. The Hacienda was decent, but could’ve been even better.
