The Haunting of Maddy Clare by Simone St. James (2012)

A historical fiction tale with a supernatural twist.
Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars
Plot: Set in 1920s England, the story follows Allistair Gellis, a ghost hunter, and his assistant Sarah Piper as they investigate a potential haunting. The haunting is thought to be done by Maddy Clare, a maid who died by suicide and whose ghost is now wreaking havoc on a small town.
Analysis: I once again enjoyed the post WWI setting that Simone St. James features in some of her books. It adds a depth to the characters and the setting that makes the story more compelling. The small town setting could come off as cliché, but I actually think it works quite nicely in this book to create an unwelcoming hostility and air of secrecy.
This story pulled me in and kept my interest, despite it being a bit predictable. It’s not my favorite of the author’s works, but I enjoyed it and would recommend it to fans of historical fiction and/or paranormal stories that don’t quite reach horror levels.
