The Mother-in-Law by Kiersten Modglin (2020)

Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars
Kiersten Modglin is popular on Goodreads among many suspense/thriller readers. I decided to give one of her books a try and picked this one for the interesting sounding plot.
The Analysis:
Single mother Loren thinks she has found the perfect guy when she marries the charming and handsome Jack. Despite not knowing her in-laws very well, Loren invites Jack’s mother to stay with them after Jack’s father passes away shortly after the wedding. When strange things begin to happen and her mother-in-law’s behavior becomes increasingly alarming, Loren begins to wonder whether she has made a huge mistake by inviting this woman into her home.
This book was creepy and twisted the whole time with an eerie feeling that something sinister was always just around the corner. I thought the book was a nice mix of genres as a cute romance and a darker mystery rolled into one. You get the guilty pleasure of reading a meet-cute while balancing the new relationship butterflies with suspense and uncertainty as the book goes on. I could see some of the twists coming, but admittedly not all of them.
At times, some of the events and character reactions seemed a bit outlandish, which made me cringe. Additionally, the main character was a pushover and frustratingly wavered between almost unjustified rage followed by self-doubt and decisions that undermined her own instincts. Despite these flaws, I enjoyed the book and The Mother-in-Law would be perfect for someone that likes a thrilling twist.
