The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf (2022)

A thriller featuring several timelines and plotlines that come together.

Laura’s Rating: 3/5 Stars

Plot: Writer Wylie Lark is staying in an isolated farmhouse while she works on finishing her latest book. Despite the house being the location of a brutal murder years earlier, Wylie isn’t disturbed until an unexpected visitor arrives at the door and turns her peaceful retreat into a mission to uncover the truth and stay alive.

Opinion: This book isn’t very long but it did take me a while to get into it. There are several storylines on different timelines and it was hard to stay invested in all of them. This may be partially on me, but I’m a little over alternating timelines and perspectives. I think it’s been overdone in recent years and ironically, I want a straightforward timeline as something different.

This was a pretty average thriller, with a couple good twists, but nothing that makes it really stand out. The blizzard conditions make it a seasonally appropriate read for the winter and the snowy backdrop was one of the things I liked best about the book. The Overnight Guest isn’t a standout thriller, but it was a decent winter read.
