The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman (2020)

Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

This book has two sequels out, with another on the way. Steven Spielberg's production company has also obtained the rights for a film adaption, so this story’s popularity and the whole series will only continue to grow.

Plot: A group of fellow retirees invite Joyce to join their club at the luxury Cooper’s Chase retirement village where they all reside. Unlike the other social clubs that meet at Cooper’s Chase, which typically involve knitting or jigsaw puzzles, this club meets to solve cold case murders. Joyce is delighted to join the group and as it happens, a real life murder occurs shortly after involving someone at Cooper’s Chase. It’s up to an eccentric group of seniors to solve the murder without becoming victims themselves.

Opinion: This book was a bit different from your typical thriller, as it’s set in a retirement community. I thought the setting and age of the characters would make this a simple cozy mystery, but it ended up being more complicated than I expected. In fact, my biggest issue with the book is that I found the plot unnecessarily convoluted and confusing. While a red herring here and there is fine, it felt like there was too much going on and too many characters to keep track of while reading.

The elderly people made for interesting protagonists and each of the main characters had a unique personality and background. There are definitely some sad and serious parts in the book, along with what I’m sure are relatable woes about growing old. The Thursday Murder Club grew on me as I read and I ended up enjoying it by the end, despite a winding path to get there. If you want to give this book a try, read carefully and pay attention so you can follow the carefully laid plot.
