The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon (2014)

ree

A generational tale of witchcraft and mystery.

Laura’s Rating: 3/5 Stars

Plot: Sara Harrison Shea was found dead in 1908, just months after the death of her young daughter. In present day, Ruthie and her family live in Sara’s old farmhouse. When Ruthie’s mom goes missing, she finds old journals from Sara that just might help her figure out what happened back then and what is happening now.

Analysis: This book is closer to what I wanted Weyward to be. It’s a similar set up: generations of women connected through time with special abilities and/or access to magic. While the plot is definitely more compelling, it still was a bit dry for my liking. It’s just so slow moving and not much happens over periods of time. I also think there’s one too many timelines. There’s plenty of story in Sara’s timeline and the present day story is unnecessary.

My quest for a great witchy book continues. The Winter People is a better entry than some, but it was a pretty average read in the end.
