🎥 Double Feature: Inside Out 1 & 2 🎥

Inside Out (2015)
An animated depiction of the emotions inside a little girl’s brain.
Laura’s Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
Plot: Young girl Riley’s emotions are each represented by an actual character- Joy, Anger, Sadness, etc. While many of her memories have been dominated by Joy, her emotions start changing after her family moves to a new city.
Analysis: The concept of this movie is such a cool way to visualize emotions and personality. As we get older, emotions get more complicated or the tone of them changes over time with perspective.
The movie was more impactful than I expected. Like why am I literally about to cry over a character named Bing-Bong? There are some powerful lessons about emotions, memories, and how sometimes our experiences are more complicated than one simple emotion. This movie is very cute and I highly recommend it.

Inside Out 2 (2024)
Laura’s Rating: 4/5 Stars
Plot: Riley is now a young teen about to start high school. Her emotions care for her newly established Sense of Self and seem to have mastered their jobs. That is, until the Puberty Alarm throws everything into disarray.
Analysis: The sequel to Inside Out is very cute and builds on the world set up in the first movie. It’s well thought out and appropriately calls back to the first film while creating a fresh storyline.
Puberty coming along without notice and literally tearing apart the inside of Riley’s head is both hilarious and relatable. More nuanced emotions like Ennui and Envy are introduced and suddenly Anxiety is in charge more than expected, which is again relatable and funny. The size of Riley’s personality islands change to reflect that some aspects are more important or have a larger impact on her. Just as we become more complex as we grow up, so do our emotions, personality, and memories. The introduction of other characters inside thoughts is great too and makes for some interesting interactions.
I’m not sure anything can top the creativity of the first movie, but Inside Out 2 is still well done and worth a watch.
