The Maid by Nita Prose (2022)
Laura’s Rating: 4/5 Stars
This book was a 2022 Goodreads Choice winner and I’m glad I finally got a chance to read it. It was a bit different and I flew through it in just a few days.
The Analysis:
Molly the maid is quirky and obsessed with cleanliness, a trait that helps her excel as a hotel maid at the Regency Grand. She doesn’t quite pick up on many of the social cues that her peers seem to, indicating that she is neurodivergent in some way. For much of her life, her Gran helps guide Molly, as do many of her coworkers. However, no one can prepare Molly for what to do when she finds a hotel guest dead in his room.
The character of Molly was a unique narrator that made the book stand out from other mysteries. The story reminded me a bit of Agatha Christie, with twists and turns along the way but not too much shock factor. Some of the book read as a bit predictable, but there was enough mystery to keep you guessing. The book artfully balances showing Molly’s introspective thoughts to the reader, while also giving enough clues from outside perspectives to keep the reader in the loop. There were a couple of loose-ish ends, but nothing that prevented the story from wrapping up.
If you’re looking for a cozier mystery that keeps you guessing, I’d recommend this book.
