Movie Review:
Shrek (2001)
5/5 Stars
I hadn’t watched Shrek for a couples years and this viewing made me laugh out loud and remind me why I love the movie. Branded as a kind of anti-fairy tale, Shrek takes familiar tropes from traditional stories and turns them upside down. The princess locked away in the castle awaits her prince to rescue her with a kiss. Instead, a green ogre and his donkey turn up and haven’t even slayed the dragon. Countless references to classic fairy tales include Snow White, the gingerbread man, three blind mice, the Big Bad Wolf, and more.
Rumored to be the project that Dreamworks would send animators to as a punishment, the film production was slow and creative differences marred the project. Despite the odds, Shrek has become a widely beloved film and was even selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
