Dear Lit and Flicks: What to Watch

Question:

Dear Anonymous,

With so many films out there, it’s hard to prioritize. Sometimes it’s overwhelming to pick and choose which movies to spend your time consuming. We’ve all spent a feature-length-film amount of time scrolling through Netflix or scanning our shelves for a movie to watch. Here is the Lit and Flicks recommended method for curating the perfect list:

1. Compile a list of all the movies you want to watch (search streaming services, check out the AFI 100 Movie List, go through Oscar nominees, and google lists of essential movies)

2. Now go through your list and be practical: Are you ever going to watch that foreign documentary your cousin recommended? Does that period film actually interest you? Cross off anything that you realistically won’t watch.

3. Next, organize your films by category, whether that be by standard genres (comedy, horror, drama) or by your own categories (movies with aliens, cult classics, or essential 90s rom coms). This way, you can go right to the section of what you’re in the mood to watch, rather than scrolling through a jumbled mess of all your movies.

4. Make plans. Are there certain movies you promised to watch with your best friend? Do you want to save a specific film for a date night? What about those guilty pleasure movies that you plan on watching alone while eating ice cream in bed? Use that thought process to either mark your movies by occasion or save them for a specific date.

5. Finally, you can make a 5-10 movie queue of what to watch ASAP. That way, you’re choosing out of a handful rather than from a giant list.

6. Get watching!

Sincerely,

Lit and Flicks
