The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware (2018)
A mystery with an intriguing premise and a slow build up followed by a wild ending.
Laura’s Rating: 2/5 Stars
Plot: Harriet, or Hal, is down on her luck, wondering how she’s going to pay the bills, when she receives a mysterious letter. Apparently, she has been named in a rather large inheritance, something she knows must be an error. However, pretending to be the right person might just be Hal’s ticket to a large payday if she can convince the troubled Westaway family that she belongs.
Analysis: The book has a great dreary, gothic atmosphere with some creepy scenes. In the beginning, the book has a similar set up and feel to The Westing Game, The Inheritance Games, or even Knives Out. The concept of an unexpected inheritance from a wealthy benefactor is always intriguing, but that was about where the intrigue stopped for me.
I didn’t love Hal as a character and often found her annoying. The story was incredibly slow moving and repetitive for much of the book and the craziness all unfolds in the last 50-100 pages. Despite all the build up, there are questions left unanswered and I was happy to be done with the book. Despite my initial excitement to finally read some Ruth Ware, I was disappointed by this book.
