Army of the Dead (2021)

Laura’s Rating: 1/5 Stars

Directed by superhero movie veteran Zack Snyder, this movie clocks in at a lengthy and unnecessary 2.5 hours. Comedian Chris D'Elia originally had a role in the film, but after numerous sexual misconduct allegations, several scenes of the movie were reshot, and he was replaced by Tig Notaro using CGI.

The Analysis:

After a military delivery of sensitive material in the desert goes awry, a superhuman zombie escapes and turns the army unit into a crew of vicious zombies. Soon, most of the city of Las Vegas is infected. Forced to contain the outbreak, the government walls off the city, surrounding it by a quarantine zone. Scott Ward, a former mercenary that fought zombies during the initial outbreak, is offered $50 million by a rich businessman if he can retrieve the $200 million contained in a vault under one of the Vegas casinos. Scott gets a crew together to infiltrate the zombie territory and escape with a fortune.

I have to admit that a zombie heist movie is pretty original, and the concept of a class of alpha zombies is new and interesting as well. However, Army of the Dead still manages to be full of cliches and cheesy dialogue, and doesn’t properly develop any of the unique ideas. Alpha zombies exist, but they don’t end up hugely impacting the plot. There are hints at a time loop, but the movie never commits to the theory. Most of the characters play a stereotypical archetype and there is minimal character development.

It feels like a 12 year old boy made this movie and that’s probably the only demographic that would enjoy it.The level of violence and gore in the movie is beyond necessary and was gross to watch. I don’t need to see someone’s jaw ripped off or fountains of blood to understand the brutality of the zombies. Finally, the ending leaves some unanswered questions and unfortunately, contains a segway into a potential sequel. Army of the Dead will absolutely be joining Sherlock Holmes (2009) in my worst movies of the year list. I do not recommend this film to anyone, don’t waste your time.
